Barbarians Invade the Roman Empire
The Roman Empire was one of the most powerful empires in history, yet they found the Barbarians to be quite a challenge. Initially, the Barbarians were forced out of their northern homelands and they were homeless migrants, wanderers trying to find a place to call home.
Roman ways were very different than Barbarian ways and opened for many of the roaming tribes to settle soon turned in to angry warfare. The off and on attacks reached the very doorsteps of Rome and it was sacked several times with booty being carried away by the winning side. Eventually, one invading Barbarian tribe decided they liked Rome just fine, thank you, and they stayed and for the first time a non-Roman was ruler of the lands of Rome.
All the sacking of Rome brought its great wealth and treasures into great danger. Much of the art, knowledge and culture were destroyed as the booty was taken and even craftsmen were carried away as captives. Many of the books that survived were smuggled to safety and throughout the early middle ages monks carefully protected and made copies of these precious books. The most important book being the Holy Scriptures, the Bible.
