Arithmetic and Beyond
Math is one of those subjects that are continuously threaded throughout the school years. For the first 15 or so years of our home school, it was the only subject that we used a textbook for. Once I started teaching online, it was also one of the first subjects that I taught online. In the lower grades the online class was like getting to come and do math games for 30 minutes to an hour - or at least that is what it felt like to the kids. It was actually a carefully designed scope and sequence of activities that would cover all the objectives for that school year and at that grade. Much like the design of our favorite math program, Saxon Math, we had the games return over a period of time, sometimes with a fresh visual update, until the students had a pretty good mastery level for that grade level. It was a lot of fun to build the course and a lot of fun to have the kids have such a good time doing it. You can see some of the whiteboard activity slides as well as some of my kids' math notebook entries in the slideshow below.
