Atoms and Molecules
This module brings with it a slight lightening of the content load. After the first two modules with 4 to 5 lectures, this one will only require two. The students will be able to take the third lecture day off.
Elements and Compounds
In lecture one, we will discuss what elements are, begin the process of memorizing the elements by learning the first 20 of them, learn the characteristics of metals and non-metals on the periodic table, and get our first introduction to ionic and covalent compounds. We will learn much more about ionic and covalent compounds as the course continues.
Laws
Lecture 2 will go in to three important laws in chemistry: Law of Mass Conservation, Law of Definite Proportions (ionic compounds), and the Law of Multiple Proportions (covalent compounds). This module will also have a brief history of a few laws of matter and how they changed over time.
Chem-Mystery
For those students that took the biology course, you already know how much fun those biomsyteries were. Chemistry has its own set of mysteries too. They are called chem-mysteries. In the life class, the students will work together using chemistry and learning the problem-solving and lab techniques that will lead to the solution of the mystery. Often these are crime mysteries with main characters and a story line to make the journey a fun one.
In this module, the chemistry students will get their first taste of a chem-mystery. They will help 10 year old Jimmy as he works to find the cause of mysterious happenings at his apartment building.
