Strata Order Game
The strata Order game was my first effort at a Flash interactive activity. I built in in response to how difficult it was to explain a lab to the Apologia General Science students. We were studying how the index fossil system was created. The index fossils are not in the full order anywhere on earth and since much of the age of the earth has been set upon the assumptions behind the strata order and index fossils it is important that the students understand how the full order was created. The original lab also required a good bit of set up on the part of parents. The Flash game allows the lab to be completed even if a parent isn't available to set the lab up.
Here is how you do the activity:
There are three wide columns to the left that represent three strata samples from different regions of the world. Use some spatial logic to figure out what order they would be in if you assume that the layers were laid down chronologically. Use the small square fossil images to drag and drop them in the order you think is correct. If the fossil stays put, you got it right. If the fossil moves back to the collection, think through your clues again and give it another try. Once all the layers are filled, you have completed the activity successfully.
