Just a Bit Moore
Ok, I couldn't resist the play on my last name for the site's name. It seemed appropriate, since by visiting mt place I hope you learn a little bit 'Moore' about me and the kids and subjects that I love so much. Below you will get some history as to how I started teaching our local co-op classes and then migrated to teaching online.
Local Co-op
One of the parents asked if I would take a look at a curriculum that she had just picked up. She wasn't quite sure how to teach it because it was not laid out in a daily lesson style. I took a look at it over the next few days and she came back over to see what I could say to help her get started with it. By the end of the visit, somehow I eneded up offering to teach it to the kids in our local home school group. That was 2003. After focusing on the IEW, then SAT II Writing test prep, and then a finish off of a Lord of the Rings theme that year. The next year, the families asked if I would teach chemistry. I had never used a textbook with my kids with the exception of math (we used Saxon). I hated the textbook approach and preferred to make my own curriculum using the unit study method and tons of research for hands -on activities, great 'real books' (not textbooks) on the topics, and having the kids create e-notebook pages of what they learned and did - you will see many of these pages in the slideshows all through the site.
I know my kids would love the blast from the past, so I am posting pics from our local co-op classes in this slide set.
